Of Spartans and Sequels

To describe something as "spartan" is to say that it's simple, austere...frugal, even. It has a "less is more" attitude. It's a principle that applied, in a unique way, to that Spartan movie, 300. Writer/director Zack Snyder took less budget ($65 million is relative pocket change in Hollywood) and made more movie with more ass-kicking per square inch of screen than most films with twice the budget. King Leonidas and his band of merry men easily made the money back in the movie's opening weekend. Now Variety reports that Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers are eager to repeat this formula for success, by making a sequel.

Hold up. Didn't practically everyone die in that movie, including main character King Leonidas? Will the sequel open with him hopping up from the battlefield, riddled with arrows, bleeding profusely? He could declare, "It's just a flesh wound!" and gamely battle on. Or perhaps King Leo could be cloned in the distant future and emerge one part Gerard Butler, one part Sigourney Weaver. Or they could follow the path of soap operas and dust off the old "identical twin" chestnut, or "he almost died but got a face transplant" stand-by.

According to Variety, "it's not clear whether it will be a prequel or spinoff." Frank Miller is currently working on the graphic novel on which the movie would be based. Snyder hasn't officially signed up yet, and won't "until after he sees Miller's take, but he's definitely interested." I'd be interested, too, if Warner Brothers waved a bunch of money at me. This is the potential danger in sequels. Bigger budgets (if indeed there is one) don't necessarily mean better movies, so let's hope Warner Bros. and Legendary take a lesson from the Spartans on that one, and keep it on the "austere" end of things.

[Let's also hope that Miller's 300 prequel is better than his Dark Knight Returns sequel. That thing was a train wreck. - Zach]
