Eight-year-olds prone to nightmares, beware: The Monster Squad -- the 1987 cult classic featuring Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, and the Mummy that just got a second life on DVD -- is set for a remake. Being that in 1987 I was eight years old and prone to nightmares, I never saw it, but the story follows a group of kids who hunt down Dracula and his team of other monsters who are trying to take over the world. Rob Cohen, the producer behind XXX and Stealth, is negotiating with Paramount over the rights. [Maybe this time, they can get Universal in the mix and use actual Universal Monsters like the Creature, rather than generic placeholders like "Gill-Man." - Zach]
I'd actually be more interested in seeing a Monster Squad-type film from someone who already has the rights to a bunch of monsters, like legendary B-movie king Roger Corman. Goony characters are ripe for the picking in that man's library. The Beast with a Million Eyes, the crab monsters from Attack of the Crab Monsters, The Wasp Woman, The Beast of the Yellow Night, and hell, throw in Machine Gun Joe from Deathrace 2000 (I don't think Stallone is doing anything). Better yet, pit the creatures from The Monster Squad against the Creatures of Corman! That is a movie I would pay to see more than once. With Corman having just finished production on the updated Death Race remake with Jason Statham, (coming out this August) he's probably ready for his next project.
