Sheriff of Nottingham Foiled, But Not by Robin

In Ridley Scott's reimagined version of the Robin Hood tale, it's the guy in the green tights who's a bit dodgy. (Perhaps even dodgier than Kevin Costner's accent in Prince of Thieves.) The Sheriff of Nottingham, as played by Russell Crowe, is supposed to be the sympathetic bloke. Even still, the good ol' sheriff didn't have the angels on his side when production on Nottingham was shut down this past weekend. According to The Hollywood Reporter, filming, which was to have begun in mid-August, "has been postponed indefinitely." It's not a tights famine or a dearth of merry men that's holding up things, but the triple threat of a possible SAG strike, lack of cooperation from Mother Nature, and a script rewrite. Such adversaries don't seem terribly exciting, considering the swashbuckling subject matter, but these days they're far more formidable than anything with a bow and arrow.

Last October, Ridley Scott told MTV that this story would be about a well-meaning Sheriff of Nottingham who is "[caught between] the minority of haves and the majority of have nots." It's an unenviable position, where a man "strives to do right while caught in the middle of two wrongs -- on one side a corrupt and unpopular King who orders him to arrest outlaws, on the other the outlaw himself who threatens to rouse the public in popular anarchy." It's a position Scott himself could probably sympathize with, as the actors gather on one side of the looming strike and studios on the other.

Even with a quick resolution, though, Nottingham would not get back into production until next spring, according to the Hollywood Reporter article. There's still the lack of greenery in the film's forest locations and the rewrite of a script that Universal calls "not yet where the studio and the filmmakers want it to be in terms of realizing the full value of the story." Depending on how the strike goes, there may be more "popular anarchy" to come.
