Back when Disney announced that its first foray back into hand-drawn animation would be The Frog Princess, a story about Maddy, a young black girl working for a spoiled white Southern debutant who was helped by a Voodoo priestess fairy godmother to win the heart of a white prince, many of us had the same reaction: "Wha-huh?" Followed fairly immediately with: "I don't know if that's the best idea." It looks like Disney has finally come to the same conclusion. Britain's The Independent is reporting that Disney has trashed everything from the character's name (who some say was too close to sounding like "Mammy") to the villain's race to the title.

The heroine of the cartoon musical (now titled The Princess and The Frog: An American Fairy Tale) is now a 19 year-old named Tiana, who will (spoiler!) live happily ever after with a handsome young man who is of as-yet unknown heritage. Commented Disney: "The story takes place in the charming elegance and grandeur of New Orleans' fabled French Quarter during the Jazz Age... Princess Tiana will be a heroine in the great tradition of Disney's rich animated fairy tale legacy, and all other characters and aspects of the story will be treated with the greatest respect and sensitivity." As opposed to the original storyline, title, et al? And is this "princess" a visiting dignitary? There are so many befuddling aspects to this venture, one has to wonder what the hell Disney was thinking in the first place.

Despite the changes already made to the film, Disney is still catching hell from critics accusing the studio of racial stereo-typing. They may do well to hire a 5th grader to vet all future projects, because I'm pretty sure even my 10-year-old second cousin could tell you that first storyboard was a really bad idea.
