There are certain movies that should be put on a "Do Not Remake" list in order to preserve people's memories and enjoyment of them. Casablanca, for one. The Godfather, probably. Oh, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Fans have been proving for over 30 years that there is no way to improve on it, if the fact that they keep going to see it and acting it out verbatim is any indication. And yet MTV Pictures is going to remake the film, using the original screenplay. At least the old fans will still be able to say the lines.
No director or cast has been announced yet (here's hoping Tim Curry returns, this time as the Criminologist), but the 2-hour remake will optimistically air sometime around Halloween 2009, according to producer Steven Adler, who also produced the 1975 film. While the script will remain the same, there may be more music added -- if we're lucky, by hot MTV acts like... wait, does MTV play music anymore?
Although the Barry-Bostwick-loving, screening-attending, toast-throwing part of me thinks this is sacrilege, I really don't know if I'm in the majority of Rocky Horror fans. After all, the hard-cores put on their own version of the film every week, and if the new film isn't bad, it might be a pleasant change of pace to act out this one once in a while. (And if it's terrible, then it might just be a lot funnier to watch.) And if we're lucky, MTV may follow it up with a remake of Richard O'Brien's highly underrated follow-up to Rocky Horror, the musical satire Shock Treatment. ...Or, better yet, Casablanca!
