The X-Files Wants You Back Bad

So how do old franchises that haven't been in the limelight in years but have a new film coming out woo their old audiences back for one more shot at box office success? If you're the studio behind The X-Files, you throw one slam-bang, pretty seriously awesome premiere. 20th Century Fox is hosting what they're calling a Fan Celebration at the world premiere screening of The X-Files: I Want to Believe on July 23rd at Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

According to reports, they're inviting fans to gather at specially built seating in front of the red carpet where they can watch all of the arrivals, and participate in a special conference before the stars walk the carpet with David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, creator Chris Carter and writer-producer Frank Spotnitz. Special credentials will be presented to the first 500 fans. For those fans not in Los Angeles (suckers!), there will be a special internet site where fans from around the globe can participate and ask the stars and filmmakers questions in real-time. On top of all that, over 100 (yeah, dude -- a HUNDRED) of the series' co-stars, guest stars and behind-the-scenes crew have also committed to attending the celebration.

For all of my reports on the new X-Files movie (of which there have been, well at least one), I don't know if I've ever come right out with it, but: I am a HUGE X-Files fan. I have watched every episode of the show at least once, own the entire series on DVD, all the old episodes they released on video (with the collectable cards!) and somewhere in my parents' pole barn resides my taped-from-TV episodes from seasons 5 through 9. And did I mention I went to the X-Files eXpo--the X-Files convention that went around the nation the summer before the first movie, The X-Files: Fight the Future (and yes, I know that's not the official title)? So yeah, I'm a big fan. An X-Phile of the highest integrity, I assure you. All that said, I've drifted in the last few years. My excitement level for the new movie, compared with, say, my excitement level at the release of the first movie, is at about a 2. I think I can speak for a lot of other fans when I say: I'll go see it, but... my X-Files enthusiasm is not what it once was.

...Until I read about the premiere. That's some hardcore fan appreciation. I was thinking about calling in sick to work to get in line for this thing even before I got to the part about the 100 co-stars and guest stars heading to the celebration to meet fans. My excitement level is back up to about an 8.5. So I must say, well played, Fox. Well played. Think TWoP can get me special press credentials? (She asked her editor hopefully...) [Sorry, no luck -- we're on secret government watch lists. - Zach] Damn.
