Calliope was the muse of epic poetry. Urania was the muse of astronomy. Terpsichore was the muse of song and dance. Val Kilmer was the muse of... Mike Myers? He didn't conspire to inspire Myers (hey, that rhymes! Thanks, Calliope!) to create The Love Guru -- we can thank Deepak Chopra for that pile of inspiration -- but he did inspire the former Saturday Night Live comedian in another of his creations. One of his smaller creations, in fact. A miniature, if you will. As Val Kilmer confessed to MTV recently, he was behind the creation of Mini-Me.
Well, if not Mini-Me himself, then certainly a key Mini-Me moment. Try to make whatever sense of this you can: Kilmer says that on the set of The Island of Dr. Moreau, he had a conversation with Marlon Brando about how he was going to "'save [his] performance just in case there was a giant hole in the second half.'" He would do this by strapping "the little man" (Brando's sidekick Majai, played by 2-foot-4-inch Dominican actor Nelson de la Rosa) to his chest, but that Brando "STOLE [his] little man!"
Now, I admit I didn't see that movie, because even just the trailer gave me sustained pains in the brain, so the visual I'm coming up with is possibly even more disturbing and strange than the original. Apparently, though, Mike Myers did see the movie and was inspired to strap a little man of his own to his chest. Kilmer says Myers himself told him so when Kilmer asked about it.
One thing he isn't claiming, though, is the role of David Lee Roth in the upcoming The Dirt. Quashing those casting rumors, he told MTV that he's too old for it and that the role calls for a "guy with funny hair." I don't know about the age part, but surely the guy who could come up with the idea to strap a little man to his chest could also think to strap a big wig to his head.
