The Dark Knight didn't just win its second weekend at the box office, it made another $75.6 million. That's more than twice what the No. 2 movie, Step Brothers, could muster, with its $30 million opening weekend.
In addition, The Dark Knight continued breaking box office records. It became the fastest movie to reach the $300 million mark, in just 10 days. It has the highest second-weekend take in history. And it became the first movie to overcome a star's arrest during opening week to go on and win again in its second weekend. (We admit that third one is probably not true, but we just couldn't help ourselves.) The Dark Knight also is already the second-highest-grossing movie this year, with $314.2 million after two weekends, behind only Iron Man, which has made $314.9 million.
Don't cry for Step Brothers and Will Ferrell, though, since a $30 million opening is plenty good for a summer comedy. Instead, save your tears for The X-Files: I Want to Believe, which finished behind third-place Mamma Mia! (which added another $17.9 million for $62.7 million after its second weekend) with a meager $10.2 million. It barely beat Journey to the Center of the Earth, which has been out for three weeks. Journey took in another $9.4 million for fifth place for the week, and a $60.2 million take so far.
The rest of the top 10:
6. Hancock, $8.2 million
7. WALL-E, $6.3 million
8. Hellboy II: The Golden Army, $4.9 million
9. Space Chimps, $4.4 million
10. Wanted, $2.7
