Bandits Retired, Olympians Hired & Zombies Expired

As much as I love Monty Python, I rarely enjoy Terry Gilliam's movies. Since Python disbanded, Gilliam seems to have waged a one-man crusade to invent new cinematic ways to get on my last nerve. Time Bandits is the sole exception, even if its last line, "Don't touch that, it's EVIL!" is what women yell at their friends whenever I try to talk to them. Since 1981, when the film was released, there's been talk of a sequel. First it was a film, then a series of TV movies, then, apparently, a comic book. Now it's nothing. With the demise of Virgin Comics, it looks like the Time Bandits sequel is officially dead. I'm disappointed. It was the one time I was looking forward to seeing if Gilliam would find a new way to my nerves.

And now for something completely different: One potentially nerve-frying movie that is getting made is Zombieland. Woody Harrelson makes that wrong turn as Albuquerque, a zombie hunter in a world full of zombies, in a horror-comedy written by the guys who wrote The Joe Schmo Show. On a related note, Harrelson was last seen in a horrible comedy called Semi-Pro, a film that almost turned me into a zombie.

And now for something else completely different: The Olympics are over, but its athletes are still on John Woo's mind. He wants to produce a sports movie featuring Olympians Guo Jingjing and Liu Xiang. He tells THR, "I want real athletes to be my lead actors, so that we can portray the athlete's spirit accurately." He obviously hasn't seen Gymkata or The Greatest, lest he'd know Olympic athletes can't act. In similar news, Olympic swimmer par excellence Michael Phelps has signed up to play both The Man From Atlantis, based on the Patrick Duffy series from the '70s, and Flipper, based on a dolphin somebody tossed into a tank at MGM in 1964. Okay, I made that last part up, but it sounded more feasible and entertaining than any other movie I've mentioned.
