Batman Forever?

It seems that I owe MWoP blogger Odie Henderson a dollar. Odie swore to me that Pineapple Express would not beat The Dark Knight at the box office this weekend, that in fact Batman would stay perched on his high gargoyle until Tropic Thunder came along. While that latter part remains to be seen, it does seem like my estimation of Seth Rogen and James Franco as Bat-breakers on a par with any of Arkham Asylum's inmates was incorrect.

The Dark Knight made another $26 million this weekend, well above runner-up Pineapple Express's $22.4 million -- although, really, it's not fair, since weekend totals don't include Wednesday and Thursday. Considering that Wednesday (actually, midnight on Tuesday) was its opening day, Pineapple made $40.5 million, which means it's already made back its budget and actually beat Dark Knight's Wednesday-Sunday take of $35.9 million -- just not its #3 spot on the list of top-grossing films of all time, with $441.5 million. So technically, I was right. Odie, I'm keeping my dollar.

But while my victory may be in dispute, anyone who thought that Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 was going to beat Dark Knight or even Pineapple Express was sorely wrong. The movie came in fourth, after The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. (And I tried to re-check that math, too, but even counting Wednesday and Thursday, The Mummy still made $22.2 million to Sisterhood's $19.7 million. Ain't that a kick in the Pants?)

Here's the rest of the Top Ten:

5. Step Brothers ($8.9 million, $80.9 million total)
6. Mamma Mia! ($8.1 million, $104 million total)
7. Journey to the Center of the Earth ($4.9 million, $81.8 million total)
8. Hancock ($3.3 million, $221.7 million total)
9. Swing Vote ($3.1 million, $12 million total)
10. Wall-E ($3 million, $210.1 million total)
