Flight of the Cyborgs

Flight of the Cyborgs

Here at MwoP.com, we love three things, and three things only: the HBO original series Flight of the Conchords, the movie Eagle vs. Shark and the Outback Steakhouse. Understandably, Kiwi komedian Jemaine Clement is one of our favorite people on the Earth. So when we heard that he was going to be in a new movie by Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre director Jared Hess, we pretty much peed ourselves, even though our expectations were set way too high for Nacho Libre and we were understandably disappointed. (I mean, come on. Jack Black playing a luchadore? I went into it expecting it to be the Godfather of lucha libre movies... not realizing it already existed and was called Champions of Justice.)

Anyway, in the new movie, Gentleman Broncos, Clement plays pretentious science-fiction author Ronald Chevalier, award-winning scribe of Cyborg Harpies, Brain Cream and Brutus & Balzaak. Unfortunately, he's tapped out of ideas, and has to resort to stealing a story idea, titled Yeast Lords, from a kid he meets at writer's camp. Chevalier already has his own phony Website, complete with a video demonstrating relaxation techniques, plus some of that computer-voice that made me laugh my ass off in the Conchords song "The Distant Future" -- a miniature sci-fi epic unto itself. Even without an official site or a trailer or a release date (it's a 2009 film), I'm pretty psyched, although the fact that I have "The Distant Future" playing on a loop on my iPod may have something to do with it.

And Clement isn't the only funny guy in the film -- Sam Rockwell plays the hero of Yeast Lords in both the geeky teen's draft and Chevalier's, and Jennifer Coolidge plays the boy's mom. I should probably mention that the teenager is played by Michael Angarano, who starred in Sky High, especially since I get the impression that he's the main character in the film. I haven't seen him in much, but I'm sure he'll be pretty funny himself, even if we're just laughing at him for his intense love of sci-fi and fantasy. Something tells me this movie will be somewhere between School for Scoundrels and the beginning and end of Galaxy Quest. But I'm keeping my expectations low -- we don't want another Nacho Libre on our hands.
