Flight of the Valkyrie

Flight of the Valkyrie

The release of Tom Cruise's upcoming Valkyrie just got moved. Again. For the third time. The film, which tells the story of a German officer (Cruise) and his failed attempt to assassinate Hitler, has had myriad problems getting to the screen. It has been through everything from rows with the German government to reshoots to rumors about its quality (or lack thereof). Directed by Bryan Singer, the movie was originally slated to be released in June of 2008, got pushed back to October, and then had to film additional scenes in the month it was originally supposed to have been released. It got pushed back again to February of 2009.

That many changes is usually the kiss of death to a film and a pretty glaring indication that it's going to be a real stinker, but the release date change this time is actually a push up. Early screenings for the film have apparently gone so well they're moving the release back into 2008, sending it off on December 26th in hopes of cashing in on that Christmas bank. When everyone is so filled with holiday cheer and goodwill toward man that they'll all want to head to the theater to watch a Hitler-assassination movie. Mm'kay.

Valkyrie, aside from being an awesome Roller Derby name (Val Kyrie, get it?), is also the name assigned to the group of maidens who served the god Odin in Germanic mythology. They were sent to earth to select slain warriors worthy of a place in Valhalla. According to Answers.com, they also represented fairness, brightness, gold and bloodshed. I'll take the over on which one distributor MGM has its fingers crossed for.

A few years ago, Tom Cruise appeared in an interview with Matt Lauer where he acted irrationally, to say the least, and he's now trying to repair bad credit with the public. During the much-publicized interview, made famous through internet sharing, Cruise called Lauer "glib," and decried the profession of psychiatry. He made amends on his publicity tour for his upcoming film "Valkyrie" by going on the Today show, and being interviewed by Lauer, during which he apologized for his previous behavior. Valkyrie debuts this Christmas. To learn more about the interview, or how to repair bad credit, click here.
