Fox to Warners: Nobody's Watching Your Watchmen

After viewing the Watchmen trailer, this Watchmen purist said that Zack Snyder deserved a torch enema from the Columbia Pictures lady. Miss C. politely declined, but the folks at 20th Century Fox are more than happy to use their spotlights on the director. Fox is attempting to enforce their prior (and apparently current) "settlement and release" rights on the Watchmen property, which they acquired in 1991 from Larry Gordon's LARGO company, and the matter now resides in court. Adding fuel to the fiery panic of the fanboys, who drool over every aspect and detail of the film, is the judge who refused Warners' request for dismissal of Fox's lawsuit. This could get ugly, folks. Who watches this Watchmen? The answer could very well be nobody.

Well, that's probably not true -- the movie is currently proceeding as planned, and Fox will likely just end up with a (lucrative) piece of the action. Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily has the definitive account of this story, replete with legal terms and enough information to ensure you'll be an expert on this case. According to her post: "Warner Bros execs are decrying to me what they say is Fox's 'opportunistic claim,' noting that 'Fox sat on its so-called rights for years while other studios in town developed this property. In fact, Paramount greenlit the movie for production and Fox never said a word! Fox even had an opportunity to re-acquire the project at some point and it passed on it!'"

I predict that Fox and Warners will settle, with Warners ponying up a large percentage of the profits to Fox. But if I'm wrong, I don't want to be at Movies Without Pity Headquarters when they tell Zach, our resident Watchmen addict, that his movie has gone the way of The Comedian. Remember that harrowing, brilliant scene in White Heat when Jimmy Cagney's Cody Jarrett finds out in prison that his evil, beloved Ma has died? Get ready for White Heat II starring Mr. Oat. [Given my pasty complexion, the film could conceivably be subtitled The Whitest Heat You've Ever Seen. - Zach]
