Perhaps the folks at Entertainment Weekly should read Movies Without Pity more often. As reported here, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince has been moved from November 2008 to July 2009. Usually when this happens (see Valkyrie -- if you can find out when it'll be released), it means the movie is in deep trouble. No such fate befalls Harry, which will be an enormous hit no matter when it's released. EW's "mistake" was putting Harry on their fall movie preview cover, which my mailman balled up and shoved into my mailbox while I was away on business. Looks like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing over at Time Warner! (To be fair, Empire magazine did the same thing, but they're British -- they'd put Harry Potter on the cover of every issue if they didn't have to worry about selling copies to us Yanks, as well.)
The editors at EW have some fun with this faux-pas: "EW and Warner Bros. share a parent company, but they clearly do not share, you know, important friggin' information." The editors then provide Warners' explanation for the move: "As for why the film was pushed out of fall, the studio explained in a statement that summertime is the 'ideal window for a family tent pole release.' But this, presumably, is not something the executives just figured out this morning." Uh-huh! Let me tell you the real reason: On September 5, 2008, Daniel Radcliffe will be showing his family (making) tent pole on Broadway in Equus, and Warners didn't want an Angel Heart vs. The Cosby Show-style split between the family-friendly and the family-freaked out. Seeing Harry's magic wand isn't at all disturbing (y'all know you wanna see it); knowing he wants to cast spells on horses with it, however, is quite disturbing. So, remember, folks: Harry 6 comes out in July 17, 2009. Harry's 6 comes out on September 5th, 2008.
Meanwhile, the first film in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight vampire series has stolen Harry's November 21st slot. It seems like this series, which unlike Potter's, I haven't read, is like Harry's little sister begging for the spotlight. Considering I've never liked vampires, I'll have to pass on both the movie and the books. Besides, vampires suck -- and I don't mean literally -- because they're not scary. What can they do to me? Steal my girlfriend and bite her neck? Take her! (Sorry, honey, I'm just being facetious! I know, I know. On the couch I go.) EW's review of the latest Twilight book points out that vampires love rough sex with masochistic, wanna-be-preggers heroines of teenager-oriented books, which still doesn't affect, scare, nor interest me. Harry Potter's got a boner for horses, and the Twilight series sounds like Judy Blume crossed with The Story of O. No wonder kids love reading this stuff!
