Let's Just Watch, Shall We?
It's been a little while since I've talked about the Watchmen movie, but I thought it would be a good idea to take another look at it, since I'm feeling depressed. The next Harry Potter movie has been pushed back until summer, which means my wife and I won't get to see it before our baby is born -- and which means Watchmen will actually come out first! March doesn't seem quite so far away anymore! And since I'm pretty excited about it (perhaps more excited than I am about Harry Potter -- blasphemy!), I thought I'd share a few links to recent multi-media elements from the film.
- Plasmic Studios has created some pretty cool interactive comparisons between the new, character-specific Watchmen movie posters and the original promotional posters for the comic book from back in the day. I had totally forgotten about these posters, despite having re-read my copy of the graphic novel recently, and I think those are in the back of it. I have to say, Malin Akerman looks good in that vinyl suit, but I still think Carla Gugino is hotter, especially knowing that Akerman is the girl from Heartbreak Kid (and you know how I feel about that movie). I don't even know what movie or TV show got me liking Carla (it must have been before Sin City, but after Spin City) -- maybe seeing her in old-woman wrinkly makeup will shake me out of it. Doubtful.
- The official Watchmen production diary puts up a new video every month, and while this one came out a week ago, it's still pretty awesome. It's a behind-the-scenes look at the Owlship, nicknamed Archie, that Nite Owl flies in the film. Apparently, there are two versions, one just for filming in and one for swinging around the set on a crane -- the latter is presumably what made an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con last month. It's kinda weird that one of the designers talks about Dan Dreiberg, a.k.a. Nite Owl, as if he was a real person who was ahead of his time, but no weirder than this diary entry, in which one of the designers tries to convince us that their Owlcave set is based on the actual Owlcave, which they supposedly discovered in New York and which conveniently collapsed. C'mon, guys -- we're excited about the movie, but we're not seven years old.
- Lastly, G4 TV went on the set and filmed more footage on the streets of 1985 New York, including shots of the porno theatre, the newsstand, the boy reading the Black Freighter comic book and Rorschach... without his mask! Lots of people are getting excited about this, like it's news, but it's basically just Jackie Earle Haley, and we all know what he looks like. (Of course, now he has red hair, and looks a little bit like Alan Kalter.) He talks about the movie a bit, and we see him carrying his "The End is Near" sign. Here's the clip:
