Don't get too excited (or fearful) yet. There's no definite plan for a fresh reboot of the Superman film franchise. There aren't even definite plans for another Superman film, period. Or at least no announced plans. Last month, Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier created a minor hubbub when, according to one website, he told a "French media outlet" that he had "heard whispers at [Warner Bros.]" that they were considering "reinventing" the Super franchise. Whispers of a reboot have been circulating since practically the day Superman Returns bowed in 2006. Now comic book writers Grant Morrison and Mark Waid are talking to MTV's Splash Page about how they'd like to do things.
Morrison discusses his theories about why Returns didn't work. To sum up: "'[Every] choice they made in that movie was wrong.'" He calls the addition of a super son a "'staggeringly awful idea.'" Morrison also found it problematic that the film "'centered on his weakness... They made him a lamb of God, rather than give us a real powerful Superman.'" Turns out he's already "pitched the film studio on how to reboot Superman." The plan? Pretend Superman Returns never happened. [And, apparently, use his All-Star Superman comic as a template for the new film. - Zach]
Now, I would have said it's too soon to try to start things over. People have a really long memory about their favorite heroes -- especially when you screw around with them. When Returns came out, many were still recalling 1987's cringe-inducing Superman IV: The Quest For Peace. But Morrison and Waid bring up a good point about The Incredible Hulk: Coming out just five years after Ang Lee's Hulk, it simply sidestepped its predecessor and started a new story on its own. "'The Hulk has proven the audience will forgive you and let you redo the franchise,'" says Waid. And if not, maybe they can work one of those kisses of forgetfulness on everyone.
