Thunder Keeps Rolling
In a week of low-wattage premieres, the thrown-into-the-spotlight Tropic Thunder has topped the box office once again. Between Ben Stiller going "full retard," Robert Downey Jr. going "full blackface" and Tom Cruise going "full fat, Jewish guy," the buzz and controversy translated into another $16.1 million this weekend, racking up a total of $65.6 million since its debut on August 13th. Which left new films The House Bunny and Transporter Thr-- er, Death Race in second and third place with $15.1 million and $12.3 million, respectively (if not respectfully).
Still, House Bunny and Death Race did better than this weekend's other three premieres. Ice Cube's The Longshots (which even I didn't know was coming out this week) came in 8th place with $4.3 million, Rainn Wilson's The Rocker came in 12th place with $2.8 million and the limited-release Hamlet 2 came in 22nd place, with $435,000. (To be fair, it only opened in 103 theatres, and Steve Coogan had to bicycle the film's sole print to each one.) The rest of the Top Dozen were all recent releases, with the exception of The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia, which clung to the 4th and 9th spots, respectively, after six weeks on the charts. With another $10.3 million, The Dark Knight is within bat-spitting distance of $500 million gross in the U.S. alone. With $381 million from overseas, that makes $870 million worldwide -- enough money for Warner Bros. to start thinking about how they can make Superman "go dark" next. (Here's an idea -- kill his super-son. Please.)
