Abusical, the Musical: Spider-Man and American Psycho go Broadway

When Hollywood movies get made into Broadway musicals, it's not necessarily a bad thing -- that is, of course, unless you consider any Broadway musical to be a "bad thing." They certainly make money, and ever since The Producers blew up, movie-based musicals like Legally Blonde, Young Frankenstein and Spam-A-Lot have played to packed houses. Hell, even Evil Dead has enjoyed a long, successful run at its Toronto theatre and on tour. Recently, we reported on the proposed 9 to 5 musical, but that seems almost logical next to the latest news. Not only is the rumored Spider-Man musical still actually happening, but there's going to be an American Psycho musical, as well. Be still, my pulsating, gore-dripping heart.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, a bunch of investors have banded together to make American Psycho a stage reality, with the book's author and the film's producer acting as producers of the show. Supposedly, the show will address the "great economic divide in this country," and it will hopefully feature the songs mentioned in the book and movie from artists including Talking Heads, Genesis and Huey Lewis and the News. (Ideally, this will be more like the equally bloody Sweeney Todd and less like the all-Billy Joel revue Movin' Out.)

Spider-Man is what has geeks like me more concerned. Few have seen, but most have heard tales of It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman, the musical that ran on Broadway for three and a half months in 1966 and was made into a TV special in 1975, and what they heard wasn't good. According to one lucky blogger who saw set designs and test footage, the Spider-Man show will be special-effects heavy, with a lot of wire work, forced-perspective sets and even LED lights. However, it will also, for some reason, include Arachne, the mythological character who was turned into a spider by Athena, and a "Greek chorus of geeks." And going either way, depending on how you feel about the band, is the all-U2-written original soundtrack. If that's not enough for you, and you want to be even more weirded out for no particular reason, check out the guys who auditioned for Peter Parker in August. There's nothing wrong with them per se, it's just weird to see 12 dudes with head shots who aspire to be a singing Tobey Maguire. Who knows -- one of these guys might even end up being American Psycho's Patrick Bateman.
