Box Office Shows Everybody's Moving to Lakeview Terrace

Samuel L. Jackson's creeptastic performance was enough to put Lakeview Terrace on top at the box office for its opening weekend. It took in $15.6 million on 2,464 screens, and it was the only one of four new movies in wide release that managed to beat Burn After Reading, which held tight in the second spot with another $11.295 million in its second week.

Next up were two more of those new wide releases: My Best Friend's Girl managed to get people to pay $8.3 million to see it, which is beyond my comprehension. And Igor brought the kids out to the tune of $8.01 million.

After that, Righteous Kill added another $7.7 million to its meager take ($28.81 million after three weeks) for a Pacino-De Niro movie. It was enough for fifth. The only other wide release of the week, Ricky Gervais vehicle Ghost Town took in $5.171 million for eighth. In its defense, though, it was on about 1,000 screens fewer than the week's other new releases. In fact, every other movie in the top 10 was playing on at least 500 more screens than the 1,505 Ghost Town played on.

Oh, and Tropic Thunder finally exited the top 10, which was:

1. Lakeview Terrace, $15,600,000 (first week)
2. Burn After Reading, $11,295,000 ($36,401,000 in two weeks)
3. My Best Friend's Girl, $8,300,000 (first week)
4. Igor, $8,010,000 (first week)
5. Righteous Kill, $7,700,000 ($28,810,000 in two weeks)
6. Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys, $7,500,000 ($28,356,000 in two weeks)
7. The Women, $5,306,000 ($19,209,000 in two weeks)
8. Ghost Town, $5,171,000 (first week)
9. The Dark Knight, $2,950,000 ($521,925,000 in 10 weeks)
10. The House Bunny, $2,800,000 ($45,724,000 in five weeks)
