Burn Earns; Preys Pays; Kill... uh, Kills

It looks like the Coen Brothers might have another success on their hands: Their latest film, Burn After Reading, not only landed at the top box office spot with a $19.4 million opening weekend, but it also helped the whole nation recover from last weekend's embarrassingly low take. Brad Pitt and George Clooney's presence in Burn After Reading might have helped the Coens to such a lofty opening weekend.

Three other new films -- all doing better than expected -- chased Burn After Reading at the box office: Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys took in $18 million, Pacino and De Niro helped Righteous Kill make $16.5 million, and The Women opened with $10.1 million. All four of those films did better than Bangkok Dangerous did in its opening last weekend, when it managed just $7.8 million to top the weekend. (Bangkok added $2.4 million for eighth place, with $12.5 million in two weeks.)

The other news this weekend is that Tropic Thunder added another $4.2 million in its fifth week, good enough for sixth place for the weekend and enough to tip it over the $100 million box office mark ($103 million and counting).
