Desperate Avengers and the Bone Lantern

People are still reeling from the bomb that went off last week when Will Smith was rumored to have been offered the role of Captain America, but this weekend a nearly-as-spectacular rumor dropped about one of Cap's teammates on the Avengers. Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria Parker was seen leaving the Marvel Studios offices, and in her hands she displayed an array of Avengers comics. Now, there's some debate over what characters appear in the issues she's holding, but most people assume that she's in talks for a role in the 2011 movie, and that role would most likely be the size-changing Wasp.

The Wasp, aka Janet Van Dyne, is a founding member of the Avengers, as well as girlfriend and, later, wife to scientist Hank Pym, a.k.a. Ant-Man. Yes, Van Dyne is white, Anglo-Saxon and Protestant, but she's also a socialite with a taste for high fashion and a wardrobe bigger than Gabrielle Solis', so the casting makes a lot of sense. Now, Ant-Man will be getting his own movie in 2010 from Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright, so many think the comically-leaning Longoria Parker may be slated for that film, rather than the conceivably more serious Avengers. (Wright has said his film will be an action movie first and foremost.) However, it is unknown at this point whether Ant-Man will in fact feature the Wasp, while the Avengers film --which supposedly features Ant-Man -- would be foolish not to have at least one woman on the team. Maybe they want Eva to play the Scarlet Witch, but one of the founders would make more sense. There's no word yet on whether the two films will overlap, but who knows -- she could end up in both of them!

Of course, while it's easy to find a list of superheroes that desperate stars would like to play, it's much more fun to see what stars the creative types themselves would like to see in the roles. Concept artist Brian Murray (the Supreme penciller, not Bill's brother) recently revealed some character artwork for the in-development Green Lantern movie, and not only did he use David Boreanaz (Bones, Angel) as his model for Green Lantern, but he used Carla Gugino (Sin City, Watchmen) for Carol Ferris! It's likely just his own preference, rather than a set of guidelines he was given, but I can't argue too much with anyone casting either of those actors in anything. However, it does raise the question -- why is this concept art necessary? Aren't there pages and pages of Green Lantern concept art out there, published every month in 22-page increments? If the artist is just going to make minor tweaks to an iconic costume and copy pictures of famous actresses, can't they just trace a GL comic and cut some photos out of Entertainment Weekly?
