The casting rumors are flying faster than the cars in front of 221b Baker Street about just who is going to be cast opposite Robert Downey Jr. in Guy Ritchie's upcoming Sherlock Holmes reinvention project. A couple of weeks ago Guy Ritchie denied rumors that Russell Crowe had been cast to play sidekick Dr. Watson, although it was quickly followed up with not-yet-denied rumors that Crowe would play Holmes' nemesis Moriarty. Now the casting rumor roulette wheel has spun again for the part of Dr. Watson and landed, rather curiously, on Colin Farrell.
Farrell would be an odd choice (as Dark Horizons put it) sure, but I personally think he'd knock it out of the park. He's a talented actor, and he'd certainly draw in the younger audiences -- and if Ritchie's Watson plays like the character in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books rather than the buffoon often depicted in past screen versions of Sherlock Holmes, all the better. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if someone along the line in the "Operator" game that is the casting rumor grapevine passed on "Colin Farrell" when they were told "Colin Firth." [Or maybe they heard that Will Ferrell was playing Watson in Apatow's comedic take on Holmes and got confused? - Zach]
While speculation is running wild, I'd like to throw out my own picks for the next round of Watson rumors: Paul Giamatti, Paul Bettany and Ludacris. Either of the Paul's would be great, not to mention fairly believable, and Ludacris already has a history of working with Ritchie going for him (he appears in the upcoming RockNRolla), and since a "reinvention" of a franchise can really mean anything, I figure what the hell. The world at large will take just about anything and like it, provided Ritchie doesn't cast Madonna in anything, ever again.
