Michael Douglas is really covering the acting spectrum lately. Last week, the Moviefile told you about the 64-year-old actor taking the role of flamboyantly be-sequined entertainer Liberace. (To me, though, Victor Garber is still the only real Liberace. Aside from the real real Liberace, I guess.) Variety reported earlier this week that Douglas will also be starring as "a car magnate with a runaway libido" in Millennium Films' Solitary Man.
With a title like that, you might wonder if Douglas will be flying solo with his libido (sorry for putting that image in your head) but the report clarifies that his character's "romantic indiscretions" destroy his career and marriage. Douglas is not unfamiliar with playing men who get into trouble when sex enters the picture. Some of his résumé reads like an instruction manual of what not to do when you're feeling libidinous. To this day, I know those who can be dissuaded from having extramarital affairs just by hearing two simple words: boiled bunny.
An article in The Guardian points out that the Solitary Man role is notable "for the fact that Douglas was widely reported to be a sex addict -- something he denied -- when he was admitted to rehab in 1990." Nothing like a little real life experience to lend verisimilitude to a role, eh? Widely reported real life experience, of course.
Susan Sarandon, Danny DeVito and Jenna Fischer are also in talks to co-star in the movie. There's no one on that list I really want to see Michael Douglas getting it on with, so here's hoping the story focuses on some of the more psychological aspects of his character's indiscretions.
