Two months ago, some diehard fans of the original Ghostbusters movies had mixed emotions -- relief that a third installment with younger replacement characters turned out to be just a rumor, but sadness that it looked like there'd be nothing strange in the neighborhood any time soon. Well, much like a slimy green ghost with an insatiable appetite, you can't keep nostalgia or a good money-maker down for long. Variety reports that "Columbia Pictures is getting serious about scaring up a new installment of its blockbuster Ghostbuster franchise."
According to the article, the studio has tapped The Office executive producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to pen the script. I'm taking it as a good sign that these guys know comedy, and that they even kind of sound like they could be Ghostbusters, along with the likes of Venkman, Spengler, Stantz and Zeddmore. The writers just finished working with original 'Buster Harold Ramis on Year One, and the article states that the "close proximity" of the three "is evidence that the ghost chasers have sparked to the idea of returning."
Set your proton packs to Cautiously Optimistic, and be careful not to cross the streams just yet. After all, a past attempt at a sequel "was stymied in the dealmaking stage." Reportedly, "so much gross was pledged to the participants that it was next to impossible for the studio to make any money on a third installment." It's not surprising the mains would want a piece of the action; the original made over $229 million in its original release, and that's in 1984 dollars. The sequel pulled in only half that, but it was enough to keep stoking interest in the characters and their universe, which lived on in animated TV series and video games, the latest of which should (hopefully) be out next year. It's still a highly viable franchise.
Just pray to Gozer it turns out all right.
