Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the DVD Extras

This week, Lucasfilm announced the features for the DVD and Blu-ray releases of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. To satisfy everybody, there will be a one-disc, no-frills DVD version as well as a two-disc Special Edition, plus a Complete Adventure Collection, with the Special Edition plus the first three Indy movies. (Sadly, they do not come in a badly dented refrigerator.) And if you're wondering if the Special Edition is worth it, you might want to check out the massive list of extras you get with it before you decide. (Or maybe watch the movie again. You don't want to buy it, then suddenly remember the scene where Shia LaBeouf swings with the monkeys.)

The first disc of the Special Edition includes two documentaries: "The Return of a Legend," which follows the evolution of the new film and a tribute to the legendary hero and his creators, and "Pre-Production," which follows Steven Spielberg as he creates animatic sequences, LaBeouf as he learns to swordfight and the reunion of filmmakers and cast on the soundstage. Hopefully, all of these things occurred at the same time, and LaBeouf kept accidentally stabbing George Lucas, and Spielberg kept coming out of his tent to tell everyone to keep it down, for God's sake.

Disc 2 includes six Production Diaries: "Shooting Begins: New Mexico"; "Back To School: New Haven, Connecticut"; "Welcome to the Jungle: Hilo, Hawaii"; "On-Set Action"; "Exploring Akator"; and "Wrapping Up!" There are also features on "Warrior Makeup", "The Crystal Skulls", "Iconic Props", "The Effects of Indy", "Adventures in Post Production" and the vaguely named "Closing: Team Indy." In the Galleries section, you get three Pre-Visualization Sequences ("Area 51 Escape"; "Jungle Chase"; and "Ants Attack"), three visits to the Art Department ("The Adventure Begins"; "Cemetery & Jungle"; and "Akator") and two trips to Stan Winston Studio ("Corpses, Skeletons & Mummies"; and "Aliens & Crystal Skulls"). There are also production photographs, behind-the-scenes photographs and portraits -- I don't know if those are just head shots or painted portraits or what, but I hope they're the kind where the eyes follow you around the room.

The Special Edition Blu-ray includes everything the Special Edition DVD has, but the movies and features are all in high-definition. Also, Disc 1 has some bonus timelines that let you "explore the movie through interactive timelines that include video featurettes, in-depth information and unique imagery." How interactive of them! The timelines include a Story Timeline, which showcases the key events of KofCS; a Production Timeline, which is a making-of chronology for the movie; and a Historical Timeline that dives into the real-world historical influences that are referenced in the film. So you can see exactly when in history aliens landed in South America and taught us agriculture.
