Russell Crowe to play Sheriff of Nottingham and Robin Hood?
There have been many rumors about who would play Robin Hood in Ridley Scott's upcoming Nottingham. Scott needed someone who could match wits with Russell Crowe as the Sheriff of Nottingham, and the latest rumor is that Scott finally found someone who fits the bill: Russell Crowe. [I haven't seen casting that inspired since Jean-Claude Van Damme played twins in Double Impact! - Zach]
I know. It's the weirdest piece of casting news we've heard in awhile ourselves. But I'm going to go out on a limb and say this won't be an Eddie-Murphy-in-a-fat-suit-style version of one guy playing more than one part. It actually sounds more than a little intriguing. After all, we've seen Crowe play that soft guy in The Insider, and the vengeance-seeking Maximus from Gladiator, and just about everything in between.
In other words, if any actor can fully embrace and own two different parts in such a way that moviegoers will actually believe they're different people, it's probably Crowe. That and the idea of seeing the good guy and the bad guy as two sides of the same coin is a much more interesting way to look at this story than with, say, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Plus, Scott's making the sheriff the hero and Robin the bad guy anyway, so it's all muddled and confusing anyway -- but in a good way. Why not make it even more so?
As excited as this casting possibility is, though, don't get too excited. After all, how many casting rumors have been buzzed about and then squashed out about this role so far? Don't believe anything about Nottingham until you see it on the big screen. [In other words, don't be surprised if they get rid of the scandal-collecting Sienna Miller and cast Crowe as Maid Marian, as well. - Zach]

Russell Crowe's got the accent for Robin Hood (or the sheriff)... though he'll probably have to get a bit slimmer than what his recent role in Body of Lies
