Beverly Hills Chihuahua Tops Box Office, Defines a Generation

I would like to think someone made a mistake in tallying the box office results this week, because the news that Beverly Hills Chihuahua was the top movie of the week depleted any little faith I might have still had in this country's taste. I know I can just use the excuse of, "It's a kids' movie. Kids will go see almost anything." But then I also have to realize that someone usually takes them to, or at least pays for, their movies. So that means adults contributed to and approved of this box office win. At any rate, it brought in $29 million for its first weekend. Granted, it was on a bazillion (3,215, to be exact) screens, but still. This is just not okay.

Coming in a distant second was Eagle Eye, which added $17.7 million in its second weekend for a two-week total of $54.6 million. In third was the movie I thought might surprise everyone and win the weekend -- at least among new releases -- Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist. It managed a pretty paltry $12 million in its opening weekend, despite the adorableness that is Michael Cera.

The next new release to crack the top 10 was the right-wing spoof An American Carol, which also makes me die inside a little. The box office was politically balanced, though, because No. 10 was Religulous, Bill Maher's indictment of organized religion. It made more than $7,000 per screen, bringing in $3.5 million on 502 screens.

The other two new releases opening on more than 1,000 screens came in 11th and 12th, respectively: Flash of Genius made $2.3 million, while Blindness brought in $2 million.

The top 10:

1. Beverly Hills Chihuahua, $29,000,000 (first week)
2. Eagle Eye, $17,700,000 ($54,605,000 in two weeks)
3. Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, $12,000,000 (first week)
4. Nights in Rodanthe, $7,355,000 ($25,075,000 in two weeks)
5. Appaloosa, $5,015,000 ($5,570,000 in three weeks)
6. Lakeview Terrace, $4,500,000 ($32,140,000 in three weeks)
7. Burn After Reading, $4,083,000 ($51,641,000 in four weeks)
8. Fireproof, $4,069,000 ($12,491,000 in two weeks)
9. An American Carol, $3,810,000 (first week)
10. Religulous, $3,500,000 ($3,519,000 in first week)
