Daniel Craig to Thor Role: 'I Say Thee Nay!' (That Means 'No.')

Out on the trail to promote the 22nd James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, Daniel Craig revealed that Marvel Studios had approached him to play Thor, according to IESB. Craig said he passed on the chance to play the comic book version of the Norse god of thunder, because "it would have been too much of a power trip," what with the mystical hand tools and flowing blond locks. Really? That's it? Too much power for one guy to handle? Somehow, I doubt it. I think there's more to it than that, after reading Craig's recent revelation in The Guardian that his scantily clad ocean scene in Casino Royale came about entirely by accident. I think the whole experience has put the actor off skimpy spandex shorts.

Craig says the immediately famous shot of him emerging from the waves in just his wee blue briefs happened because he stood up where the water was shallower than anticipated. He was just supposed to swim off into deeper water, but ended up in the oceanic equivalent of the kiddie pool, revealing just how many olives were in his martini. He was dismayed when it happened (his reaction was to think "Oh, fuck"), although he didn't realize then that he would be so "haunted" by it forever. Yeah, being thought of as a hot dude in little shorts is just terrible. Sure, it's the first picture that comes up if you Google his name (not that I do these things regularly), and maybe as a serious actor it's kind of embarrassing to be turned into a pinup boy, but there are worse ways to be remembered at the beach -- just ask Val Kilmer.

Maybe if Marvel approaches Craig again, they should mention Thor gets to wear tights under his shorts.
