Max Payne saves us all from Beverly Hills Chihuahua

Mark Wahlberg's videogame adaptation Max Payne managed to unseat Beverly Hills Chihuahua after the talking-dog movie had been at the top of the weekend box office for two weeks in a row. But no other new release did better than a third helping of Chihuahua. I'm starting to wonder if there's something wrong with me for not thinking that movie could possibly be good. But I'm going to stick with what I said last week: The problem lies with America.

Possibly thanks to all of Mark Wahlberg's press (and then his appearance on Saturday Night Live) Max Payne made $18 million for the top spot. Beverly Hills Chihuahua brought in another $11.2 million for the weekend, to hang on at number two. It's at $69 million so far, which puts it on the road to at least $100 million at the box office. Two new releases were nipping on the Chihuahua's heels, though: The Secret Life of Bees made $11.1 million and W. made $10.6 million.

Oliver Stone has only had four films open stronger at the box office than W., and none of those were political films. It looks like W. will break the box office drought that's been plaguing political films leading up to this election.

The only other new wide release, Sex Drive, managed only $3.6 million for ninth place. Could it be that people are finally sick of the raunchy sex comedies? Or maybe just the ones that look this stupid. I'd settle for either, frankly.
