If you've seen footage of Dr. Manhattan, the glowing, atomic superhero who plays a major role in Zack Snyder's Watchmen movie, you've probably thought to yourself, "How do they do that?" Or maybe you didn't. Maybe you know everything there is to know about special effects, and I'm a big stupidhead. Well, I may be a big stupidhead, but I don't think I'm alone in being curious about how they made the glow from a computer-generated character appear on the real-life characters he was interacting with. Luckily, this stupidhead need wonder no longer!
In the newest Watchmen set diary video, we see how they brought Dr. Manhattan to life, from the Tron-looking suit that covers the actor in light-emitting diodes, to the facial markers that capture all of Billy Crudup's expressions. The diodes are what cast the glow on other actors and sets (there are even diodes on the soles of his shoes, to light the footprints), and when Manhattan splits into four bodies, there are three extras on set wearing other Tron suits. Of course, when he grows to 45 feet tall, they need something that casts a little bit more light, so they hang a giant blue lightbulb, basically, where he would be standing. You can see that behind-the-scenes footage -- plus, for the first time anywhere, the finished shot of giant Dr. Manhattan in his lab -- in the video! Excitement!
Plus: Check out our recap of the press screening footage that was recently shown in New York and L.A., then check back for Snyder's and Dave Gibbons' Q&A from the event!
