Here is a bit of Academy Awards trivia for you: Did you know that since the Oscars started being televised in the early 1950s, movie studios were not allowed to advertise any of their films during the telecast? Did you ever notice? Me neither. And it's too late to look for it, too, because this year, that's all about to change. In years past, the worry was that letting studios advertise during the show might appear as though the studios were influencing the outcome of the awards, despite the fact that votes had already been cast and collated. Still, the fact that Hollywood was actively trying to defer even the hint of impropriety is really rich. There's a first time for everything!
The Academy recently put together a committee to study the issue, and after listening to the committee's recommendations, the Academy board of governors voted to lift the ban on film advertising during the telecast, with a few caveats. Firstly, the spots won't be permitted to promote any of the nominated movies -- or any prequels or sequels to the nominees -- whatever the genre. Furthermore, movies in current release will also be impermissible, with only movies that are set to open during the last week of April or later allowed. In addition, those spots that can actually air are not allowed to use the words "Oscar" or "Academy Award" anywhere in the ad. On top of all of that, each distributor will only be allowed one 30 or 60 spot each, and only one of those spots can air during each commercial break. So, if during the next Oscar telecast, you want to see the trailer for a movie that's going to open sometime in the summer or later; that may or may not have an Oscar-winning actor/writer/director involved; and that is not a prequel or sequel to any of the nominees that night, don't use your TiVo to skip commercials, don't get up to pee or to grab another beer for your Oscar drinking game, and it would probably be a good idea not to blink either, or chances are you're totally going to miss it.
