The story, broken by Adult Video News and reported straight-faced by Variety, is maybe the best -- and most definitely my favorite -- of the articles I've covered in my tenure here at Movies Without Pity. The "without pity" part gives me a license to snark that the poor shmucks at Variety could only dream about. Reports Var, "The 20-year-old Grey entered the skin biz just after her 18th birthday" (yeah, right) "and has appeared in scores of XXX flicks. In January she became the youngest recipient of AVN's Female Performer of the Year award." I hope they put that in the trailer: "From Academy Award winning director Steven Soderbergh, and Adult Video News award winner Sasha Grey..." Variety goes on to list Grey's favorite film makers (Jean-Luc Godard, Bernardo Bertolucci and Catherine Breillat) and quotes the starlet: "To have the opportunity to work for an Academy Award-winning auteur is truly a great honor." I wonder if she walks around the porn set yelling "Where's the damn auteur? I'm getting cold!"

Snarky jokes aside, good on Grey for breaking into legitimate non-Valley film work. If she happens to be one of those young actresses who wanted to break into acting so badly she started making porn, then she's one of the few I can think of for which the tactic actually worked. Eventually, she may even land a role in which she doesn't even have to show her boobs.
