Twilight Sequel Greenlit Before Film Even Opens

I've heard of a studio greenlighting a movie's sequel after a great opening weekend at the box office, but I can't say as I've ever heard of a sequel getting a green light on merely the expectation of maybe having a great opening weekend at the box office. Despite the fact that the film doesn't open for another month, Summit Entertainment is already readying a sequel to Twilight, the film based on the first book in Stephenie Meyer's vampire novel series. The maybe-great opening weekend they're expecting? Summit has issued an estimated opening weekend take of a whopping $20 million. Yeah, that's it. So they don't expect to make their money back right away (the film's budget was $37 million) but they're firing away on sequel. I guess it helps when you have source material?

That all said, Twilight garnered a huge and welcoming reception at July's Comic-Con, and upon its release last week, the latest trailer had more than 3.5 million views in its first 48 hours of release. Summit is likely playing it safe with their tracking estimates. Says Dark Horizons, "There may be a built-in fan base with the books, and the teenage girl crowd is going nuts for it, but there is a legitimate question of its longevity and appeal outside that demographic -- especially amongst males." Because only chicks go to see movies like Titanic, and we all know how that turned out.

The Titanic crowd is likely the one they're going for, and are probably hoping for Titanic-like rewatches as well. As an eyewitness of today's screaming teenage girl hysteria (the Jonas Brothers played a set in our sister building about a month ago, and I could hear the high-pitched cacophony through two offices and a cubicle wall), far be it from me to underestimate DiCaprio-level cuteness and romanticism in the form of a pale Cedric Diggory. I'm sure in its opening weekend Twilight will do at least 150% of its current estimated take, and Summit's CEO will be lauded as having a real brainwave of foresight. Then again, I thought Beverly Hills Chihuahua would tank, so perhaps I don't quite have my finger on the pulse of today's movie-going crowd. Time will tell, and so will your ear drums when you drive by the theater on opening night.
