William Shatner Upset About Supposed Wedding, Star Trek Snubs

If Spock were around, I'm sure he'd be telling Captain Kirk that he was being a tad illogical. The man who played the original Kirk, William Shatner, went off on Mr. Sulu (George Takei), for a perceived non-invite to his wedding earlier this year, inferring that Takei was both sick and psychotic. In other news, Shatner has already made the list for my upcoming nuptials, whenever those might be. Takei, who came out of the closet in 2005, was married to his longtime partner Brad Altman in September of this year after California's Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay marriage. Many of the original Trek stars came to the ceremony, including Nichelle Nichols (Uhura) who was matron of honor, and Walter Koenig (Chekhov), who was best man. Shatner was an obvious no-show, though there seems to be some debate as to whether or not he was actually invited, since Takei said, "It is unfortunate that Bill was unable to join us for our wedding, as he indeed was invited to attend."

Shatner on the other hand, went and made this video. In it, the lady who is interviewing him cautiously and kind of hilariously brings up the fact that Takei was married earlier this year and "made a point of not inviting [him]" following up with "how do you feel about that?" To which Shatner responds conversationally, "The whole thing makes me feel badly, poor man. There is such a sickness there. It's so patently obvious that there is a psychosis there. I don't know what his original thing about me was. I have no idea." He then goes on to explain how Takei only worked a few days on the set and how he didn't know the man, responding to reports that Takei had said that he was frequently annoyed with Shatner while on the set of the show and movies because he would pressure directors to use close-ups of Kirk even when the dialogue focused on other characters. Shatner goes on to say "There must be something else inside of George that is festering and makes him so unhappy that he takes it out on me -- in effect a total stranger." By... not inviting you to his wedding? I don't intend to invite total strangers to my wedding either, Bill, unless they're distant relatives and my mother makes me. I think my favorite part of the interview though, is near the end when the shit-starting interviewer says lightly, "Well, it's possible that he just wanted to invite the intimate people in this life." HA!

[This is not the first video Shatner has made calling someone out for something they claim not to have done. When J.J. Abrams said that they tried to get Shatner for the new Trek movie and failed, Shatner released this video saying that he was never offered anything. When interviewed later by Entertainment Weekly, Abrams reasserted that they offered him a cameo, and were turned down. - Zach]

Whether Shatner was invited to the wedding or not seems to be open to interpretation, but the gloves are obviously off as far as Shatner is concerned. I wonder if TheKnot.com has any advice for Takei on how to politely respond to a no-show guest's YouTube diatribe. Maybe he should ask Carley.
