I'm not going to lie -- Zac Efron, for all the High School Musical-y stuff he's done (I can't drive two blocks without seeing him jumping ecstatically in a cap and gown), earned my respect for his stint as Link in Hairspray. For all the fun I'd normally make of a guy with hair as floppy and in need of cutting as his, I won't, because what John Waters has joined together, let no blogger put asunder. So, it is with humility and a straight face that I bring you the news that the Footloose remake that will star one Mr. Zac Efron, has gotten the blessing of Kevin Bacon. I'm sure we'll all sleep better.
Efron, who of course stars in the upcoming High School Musical 3, will add the remake to a list of upcoming projects, including teen movie 17 Again, as well as the drama Me and Orson Welles. He met the veteran actor (Bacon, not Welles) at an event earlier this month, and they spoke briefly about the remake. I wonder if they spoke about exactly which pockets of the country still find dancing to be sinful? I will say the suspension of disbelief as far as that goes is a lot easier to maintain when the movie itself will be a musical in format. A whole town that outlaws dancing and enforces it in the year 2008? I don't know. You put it to music, though, and I'll believe just about anything. Now, if they can just get John Waters attached, it'll be a musical/remake that I'll not only buy, but that I'll buy tickets to. Especially when Kevin Bacon says it's okay.
