I don't know how many of you hit the stores on Black Friday for the crazy deals and even crazier lines (personally, I can't get past the parking lot mayhem), but for movie lovers, even in this crap economy, this Friday may be the day you want to show up at Best Buy at 5 a.m. and get that Blu-ray player for $150 or whatever they're going for. It was just announced today that Japan's Panasonic Corporation has submitted a proposal to the Blu-ray Disc Association (the body that oversees the format's standardization, etc.) to create a "Blu-ray Disc standard to store three-dimensional imagery formed of left-/right-eye two-channel full-High Definition images (1920x1080 pixels)." And what does that mean for you? 3-D on Blu-ray, baby!
I'll admit that 3-D is a novelty I could live without -- not that it isn't cool sometimes, but the need for glasses coupled with the discombobulating format has always struck me as a bit disconcerting -- all the extra accoutrements tend to take me out of the moment when I'm sitting there watching a movie (plus those stupid paper glasses never stay on my little ears). So while the technology required to make a movie 3-D without all the extra paraphernalia is not yet here, this proposal from Panasonic will at least ensure that you could buy a Blu-ray movie and you could watch that film in 3-D without having to buy a new player or TV set. And for those families still smarting from the HD-DVD/Blu-ray technology-off (or even those still smarting from the Beta/VHS technology-off -- hi, boyfriend's dad!), a proposal like this, which will utilize existing standard technology is a very good thing. According to Dark Horizons, the Blu-ray Disc Association hopes to begin discussion on the proposal before the end of this year, with commercial adoption coming as soon as 2010.
