Beyoncé Wants to Play Independent Wonder Woman

As if to say "you must not know 'bout me and my love of superheroes," Beyoncé Knowles has declared that she would like to play Wonder Woman should a film version ever get off the ground, according to an interview with the L.A. Times. She's so serious about it, in fact, that she's already met with people at Warner Bros. and DC Comics to discuss the possibility. Now, I haven't seen many of Beyoncé's movies -- I intentionally missed Dreamgirls and Pink Panther -- but I have seen her in Austin Powers: Goldmember, and if that was all she'd been in, I would have to say that I don't think she's ready for the JLA. (The JLA, of course, being the Justice League of America, of which Wonder Woman is a charter memb-- oh, never mind.) But considering she's about to play a threatened wife in Obsessed and Etta James in Cadillac Records, she must be doing something right, right?

Not that a good superhero movie necessarily needs a great actor. Sure, Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man and Jennifer Garner in Elektra seem to support that argument, but Halle Berry has won awards and yet Catwoman was still awful from the word "go." But as long as Beyoncé can deliver her lines with a straight face, in the hands of a good director she could be a great Wonder Woman. She'd certainly fill out the breastplate.

I don't see a problem with the color of her skin, either -- and not in a "Yes We Can," why-the-hell-not kind of way. True, Wonder Woman is usually depicted as being of vaguely Greek extraction (the one constant characteristic between artists is fair skin and black hair), but in the comics her Amazonian sisters come in a multitude of races. Plus, Diana was actually made by her mother out of clay, so that gives you a variety of earth tones to choose from. Besides, it's not like the color of her skin is really a huge part of who she is... unlike, say, Captain America, the blond, blue-eyed draft reject who was specifically chosen to serve as a symbol on the battlefield in the 1940s. Which may be why the rumor (now disproven) that Will Smith was up for the role of Cap was met with geek fury. Any geek who objects to Beyoncé simply isn't looking at the big picture. Or, rather, a big picture.
