Jack Black is about to be a Yahoo. Well, more of one than normal, anyway. 20th Century Fox is moving forward with production on a version of Gulliver's Travels, and it will be the actor's next project. Fox's take will be a modern version, with Black playing the title character Lemuel Gulliver as a travel writer who, on an assignment to the Bermuda Triangle, suddenly finds himself a giant among men when he washes ashore on the hidden island of Lilliput, home to a population of industrious, yet tiny, people. Which, being a girl over 6 feet tall, is kind of how I feel on the elevator every day.
Written by Joe Stillman, who wrote Shrek, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller, Shark Tale's Rob Letterman will direct. Fox has kept other details of the production on the QT, a practice that is fairly normal when working on material that's in the public domain. Which always makes me laugh because, while I understand wanting to keep your twist on the story a secret, so people can only see it when they buy a ticket, the general population usually already gets the gist. I mean, isn't the point of using a story in the public domain that people always love a classic? I digress.
With Black attached, you can bet the film will be more straight comedy than satire, and I do wonder whether or not Gulliver will travel to any of the other lands from the 1726 classic. I mean, isn't it every 8-year-old girl's dream to travel to the land of horses? [I smell sequel! Three of them! - Zach] In any event, locations are still being set, and Fox hopes to put the film into production in March, adding it to the list of eleventy other films starting production next spring. Hopefully they'll find an island location no one else is using.
