Michael Bay Puts Transformers Inside Girls, Makes Them 'Awesomer'
Transformers fans are fawning over any facts or pictures they can find from the set of the new Transformers movie, Revenge of the Fallen, and they just got a doozy. While one complaint about the last film was "not enough robots" (a complaint I don't understand, since there were a dozen of them, and you could barely tell them apart from each other), Revenge seems to be correcting that with three times as many in this film, according to a producer. That includes the return of main baddie Megatron with a new tank mode, the franchise's first female Transformer (Arcee), its first combiner Transformer (Devastator) and the evil Transformer boogeyman The Fallen -- all of whom are straight out of the comic and toy line. The latest news has people agog, though: Isobel Lucas, who co-stars in the film with Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, may be a Transformer herself.
Well, technically not Lucas -- although she did seem to come out of that Shia LaBeouf car crash suspiciously unscathed. No, according to TFW2005, a Transformers news site, they have confirmed (it isn't said with whom) that the character of Alice, played by Lucas, is in fact a Pretender. The Pretenders are a mostly ignored subset of the Transformers toy line that were encased in organic shells to disguise their true natures -- in Alice's case, that shell is a hot blonde. (Whether this is a calculated nod to the Transformers mythos or just a Bay idea that happens to have roots in the mythos is a matter of debate.) Of course, in the comic books, these disguises didn't work too well, as they were still 10 times taller than most humans, but TFW2005 reports that the robot inside Alice is similar to the first movie's Frenzy, a human-sized Decepticon who turned into a boombox. You know what else it'll be similar to? A frickin' Terminator.
2003's Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines introduced the first female Terminator to the films, the T-X, and she was... a hot blonde with a robot inside her. Now, if this Pretender rumor is true, the Alice-robot will also have "an arm that transforms into an energy weapon, a long tongue, and a scanning tentacle," according to TFW2005. But, hey -- look who else has an arm that transforms into an energy weapon! Part of me is interested to see how they handle it, I guess, since T3 was pretty bad (and Eve of Destruction wasn't much better), but the rest of me would rather see more cool giant-Transformer action, and less "inflating my boobs to distract the police" action.
