Ridley Scott to Make Monopoly Movie Look Like Blade Runner
No, I don't mean that Ridley Scott is going to direct a movie so bad that it will make the sure-to-be-cheesy adaptation of the real estate board game Monopoly look like Blade Runner in comparison. I mean that Ridley Scott, the director of Blade Runner and Alien, who was on the verge of redeeming himself as a geek auteur with adaptations of Robin Hood and The Forever War, is now signed on to direct the Monopoly movie, and he wants to make it look like Blade Runner. Which makes sense, because you'd have to travel pretty far into the future to find a way to make the housing market exciting again. (Or maybe he's going for dystopic?)
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Ridley Scott, who has been attached as a producer on Monopoly and has been mentioned as a possible director, is now officially attached to helm the project, with an eye toward giving it a futuristic sheen along the lines of his iconic Blade Runner." Considering that the game recently traded in its multicolored paper money for a debit card system, it looks like the futurization has already begun. My only question is whether this will be a futuristic American city, with a Boardwalk and a Baltic Avenue, or if they'll go for the international market and base it on the World Edition, where you can buy and sell entire cities from around the world, including such exciting locales as Belgrade and Vancouver. (Please, please, please let it take place in Vancouver.)
Of course, if they really want it to be a science-fiction movie, they could just base it on the Transformers edition, but then all property disputes would be settled by the race car and the Scottie dog transforming into robots and beating the snot out of each other.
