Apparently, Jim Carrey still has it, as his wacky comedy Liar, Liar-- uh, we mean Yes Man topped the box office this weekend, beating out Will "I am Box Office Legend" Smith's sad-looking Seven Pounds. But just barely -- Jimbo got $18.1 million, while Big Willy got an even $16 mill. Still, they were the standouts of the weekend, which remained mellow in the face of holiday shopping. (Expect the holiday weekend, with its six major releases, to turn everything on its ear.)
Coming in third place was the new animated movie The Tale of Despereaux. With an all-star cast, including Mathew Broderick as the lead, big-eared mouse and Emma "Hermione Granger" Watson as the princess, it managed to pull in $10.5 million, which is nowhere near what its thematic predecessor Ratatouille did on its opening weekend -- or Bolt, Madagascar 2 or Kung Fu Panda for that matter. (Although, like everything else, it did beat Delgo.)
Despereaux did, however, manage to "squeak" out a victory (get it?) over The Day the Earth Stood Still, which had a 66% decline this week, probably due to some foul word of mouth (or Keanu backlash?), and only pulled in $10.1 million. And Four Christmases rounded out the top 5, breaking $100 million and making the possibility of a sequel a lot more likely.
The rest of the Top Ten:
1. Yes Man ($18,160,000 in first week)
2. Seven Pounds ($16,000,000 in first week)
3. The Tale of Despereaux ($10,507,000 in first week)
4. The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008) ($10,150,000; two-week total $48,627,000)
5. Four Christmases ( $7,745,000; four-week total $100,154,000)
6. Twilight ($5,227,000; five-week total $158,461,000)
7. Bolt ($4,256,000; five-week total $95,009,000)
8. Slumdog Millionaire ($3,150,000; six-week total $12,134,000)
9. Australia ($2,325,000; four-week total $41,947,000)
10. Quantum of Solace ($2,150,000; six-week total $161,300,000)
What did you see this weekend? What did you like?
