Bettie Page, the pin-up model who helped make bangs and bondage famous, died last night at a Los Angeles hospital after suffering a heart attack last week. She was 85.
Page studied acting with the hopes of becoming a movie star, but it was as a pin-up girl that she found fame. An uninhibited model, she got her start in New York City "camera clubs", posing nude in the name of (or the guise of) art in order to get around the anti-pornography laws of the time. She also gained fame as a bondage model, with her leather-clad poses inspiring the S&M fantasies of many a boy and girl for decades to come. Her movie career more or less begins and ends with burlesque films, but you can see Gretchen Mol as Bettie in The Notorious Bettie Page or catch Mark Mori's documentary about her life next year.
