G-Force Movie is Totally Not What I Thought It Was

Have you ever bit into a Jelly Belly jellybean, expecting it to be something tasty, like Toasted Marshmallow, but instead it's something nasty, like Buttered Popcorn? I totally got ready for marshmallows when I saw a news story that announced that there was a trailer out for the movie G-Force. I was like, "Awesome! Finally, a full trailer for the sure-to-be-excellent computer-animated movie about a team of five crime fighters in bird suits, based on the Japanese cartoon of the same name that I grew up watching!" Then I clicked the link, and the taste of Buttered Popcorn jellybeans filled my mouth. G-Force the movie is something totally, totally different, and totally, totally nauseating.

Picking up where Alvin and the Chipmunks and Garfield left off, G-Force is Disney's newest CGI-animal action-comedy, this time about a team of secret agent guinea pigs. Oh, you heard me. Secret. Agent. Guinea pigs. Except there's also a fly who does surveillance and a mole who's good at computers, because when we think of animals that can't see well and sit underground in the dark all the time, we think "computer programmer." They can talk to humans, they pack high-tech weaponry and they have car chases in souped-up rolly balls, and every kid in America is going to love the crap out of this movie. I'm willing to bet that Disney has bought shares in the country's largest guinea pig breeding company, because sales will surely skyrocket.

The cast of this movies is horrifyingly good, meaning that they are all people I once respected, for the most part. The G-Pigz are played by Tracy Morgan, Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Jon Favreau and Penelope Cruz, and the mole is played by Nicolas Cage, doing a nerdy voice similar to the one he used in Peggy Sue Got Married. Will Arnett, Niecy Nash, Bill Nighy and Zach Galifianakis all have roles, and I once again have to wonder where I got the idea that Zach Galifianakis was some kind of comedy rebel. I suppose even rebels have to eat. Loudon Wainwright III appears as a grandfather, and he actually calls one of the gerbils a "horrible crime against nature" in the trailer. I couldn't agree more.

Sadly, in real G-Force news, I had forgotten that the anime-based movie (which is actually happening) was using the show's original Japanese name, Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, which totally isn't going to do as well in America as G-Force would have. (Is it too late to go with the show's other name, Battle of the Planets?) IMDb says the movie's coming out in April, but considering that only 10 seconds of footage and some concept art have been released, I think I believe Imagi Animation's official site, which says it'll be out in 2010, after they wrap 2009's Astro Boy. Hopefully by then, people will have forgotten about Disney's G-Force, although I'm sure G2: When Guinea Pigs Attack will already be entering production.

Not cool. I loved "G-Force". I had a crush on Mark. There, that's my nerd-confession for the year.
