Johnny Depp is definitely keeping himself more than busy. In addition to all of his upcoming projects and his running a secret production company, legendary producer Richard Zanuck has announced what his next next project will be. After working with Tim Burton on Alice in Wonderland, Collider.com reports that Depp will again team with the director on a film take of the 70's gothic ABC soap opera Dark Shadows.
According to the Collider video interview, Zanuck says that Depp used to ditch school so he could go home and watch the soap, which featured ghosts, werewolves, zombies, witches, vampires, and the like. Depp will play vampire Barnabas Collins, a character which launched the show into major popularity about a year into its run. According to JoBlo.com, the film will revolve around what happens when a governess arrives at the Collins family mansion to find vampires afoot. Though the Collider exclusive doesn't mention any other talent attached to the project, IMDb lists John August as the screenwriter and a release date of 2011.
The film will mark the eighth time Depp and Burton have worked together, and if Burton didn't put his deserving and talented wife Helena Bonham Carter in just about everything he did, I wouldn't blame her if she got a bit jealous. Actually, there are myriad parts she could play in Dark Shadows, like say... the governess? In any event, the pair never ceases to bring forth evocative and interesting films, and I look forward to this one as I do to all the rest. Provided Johnny Depp doesn't bring back the creepy Willy Wonka pageboy haircut. Not a big fan of that one.
