Kate Winslet's Golden Globes (That's Not What We Meant!)

It's a good year to be Kate Winslet. At least, it is in the eyes of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. This morning, the nominees were announced for this year's Golden Globes, and the actress not only has a nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (drama category) for Revolutionary Road, but a Best Supporting Actress nod for The Reader, as well. Oh, and both films are also up for the Best Picture award. Kate Winslet is the fricking 2008 Midas with a Golden Globe touch. The awards show, known best around these parts for serving booze throughout the evening (thus making for slightly more colorful acceptance speeches, from which everyone benefits, really) and also for snarling traffic at Wilshire and Santa Monica on an otherwise Free Ride Sunday Night, passed out nominations -- at least, for the most esteemed award of the night, Best Motion Picture, Drama -- to a handful of movies that 99% of the population hasn't seen yet. Almost all of the films open in the theaters in the future, with the exception of two (Frost/Nixon and Slumdog Millionaire) that opened only recently and to very limited release. Rejoice, movie-lovers! At least it'll give you something to look forward to. A list of those noms, after the jump.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Probably the most anticipated of the Best Picture (Drama) nominees, the high-concept flick opens wide on Christmas Day and will give the world an idea of what Brad Pitt will look like when he's old, provided he doesn't get any work done, and you can get around the fact that he's a child. Who's old. Go with it.

Frost/Nixon got a nod, as did star Frank Langella for Best Actor. It's always interesting to see Hollywood's take on historical events, particularly ones like this, which were broadcast on television. Makes for fun side-by-side comparisons, and increased You Tube hits for the original.

The Reader - Everyone loves a good "Love In The Time of Nazis" story!

Revolutionary Road - Though it'll be fun to see King of the World Leonardo DiCaprio team up again with his Titanic co-star Kate Winslet, the film just looks depressing. Depressing enough that both stars got Best Actor nods for emoting.

Slumdog Millionaire looks like a great little movie that not enough people have heard about. It tells the story of a street kid from Mumbai that is set to win the big prize on his country's version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire when he's arrested after the show breaks for the night on suspicion of cheating. A root-for-the-underdog movie with a love story, too. Find it in your local theaters, folks.

As far as Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical, the nominees are both a little more fun, and movies with a bit wider release. They are: Burn After Reading (with the compulsory Cohen Bros nomination), Happy-Go-Lucky, In Bruges, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and my personal favorite for the win, if only because there's an exclamation point in its title, Mamma Mia!.

The only film that seemingly got the shaft in my opinion is Wall-E, which got nominated along with Kung-Fu Panda and Bolt for Best Animated Film. With an animated category, it feels like films worthy of getting a Best Picture nod get cast off to the lesser annals of movie-dom for no real reason. Come on, Hollywood Foreign Press Association! You're supposed to have the fun awards show!

Pineapple Express is a drama? That's got to be a joke or a typo right?

Obviously a typo. There's already a posting for Best Actor - Drama a couple paragraphs above that. It's meant to say Best Actor - Comedy. Yet another proofing mistake for TWoP.

Man, Tom Cruise's PR people must've been on overdrive to garner him that nomination. He is nothing EVER but Tom Cruise with less or more makeup. Or an eyepatch, apparently. But still, always, only, Tom Cruise. He makes Kevin Costner look like Lawrence Olivier.

I'm really hoping that Kate and Leo will beat that overrated, overexposed monster that is Brangelina. Kate in particular is in some serious need of recognition. She is by far one of the best actresses of her generation and it's a crying shame she hasn't won an Oscar yet.

Tom Cruise was good as the studio exec in Tropic Thunder. Just plain creepy.

No Best Picture for The Dark Knight??? I mean, I know there's a prejudice regarding action movies but *seriously*. Dark Knight was hands down the best movie of the year (that anyone saw).

Oh man. Slumdog Millionaire is SO good. Like, way better than it sounds, and it sounds pretty good. I know it's going to be an underdog, but I'm pulling for it to take home as many awards as possible. At least best screenplay! Oh, and score, because the music is great.

I agree that the total overlooking of The Dark Night (not even a nod to Ledger?) sucks.

Nothing for Aaron Eckhart in Dark Knight? Really? He owned that movie and broke my heart.
Or Christian Bale? Okay.

I also cannot believe that they didn't nominate The Dark Knight for Best Picture. Don't they know the ratings would go up a whole lot if they nominated a movie that people had actually seen? Not to mention one of the highest grossing movies of all time. And besides that it was the best movie released this year. It would be awesome if the Oscars came to their senses and nominated it...but I doubt it.

IN BRUGES. Despite being one of the best movies of the year, I was not expecting it (or Farrell & Gleeson!!!) to be nominated for anything this awards season. Hollywood Foreign Press, I could totally make out with you right now.

- Awesome that James Franco got a nod, he was freaking hilarious in Pineapple Express.
- I'm with Izzy, I wish Aaron Eckhart were part of the list of nominees. He was my favorite thing about that movie.
- Where's "Another Way to Die" (Jack White, Alicia Keys) on Best Original Song?!?
- Loved RDJ in Tropic Thunder. Fabulous.
- Yup, Wall-E totally got shafted.

OMG I just watched Slumdog Millionaire. It is definitely one of the best, if not the best movie of the year. Yes, I definitely like it better than Dark Knight. It's like City of God, but even better! If you have not had a chance to watch it, make sure you do!!

BENJAMIN BUTTON nominated?!?!?!?

WORST movie I saw this year. The entire audience groaned every time we flipped back to the frame and had to listen to ancient Cate Blanchett doing her annoying Katherine Hepburn voice. Nails on a blackboard would have been more welcome. POINTLESS.

And what's the point of Benjamin leaving his infant and writes a letter that's supposed to make it all better for the daughter saying things like, "you can do anything..." after he abandons her!? WTF was that about?

What about Queenie's daughter, Benjamin's sister? They throw her in and then she's gone?

What a complete mess of a movie -- someone shoot the scriptwriter, the director, the editor, Blanchett's agent, Pitt for not using his star power to insist on a better script!

FIVE hours of pure torture -- yeah, I know it's advertised as three hours long but it felt like five. ANd speaking of time ... WTF was the point of the clock (other than the obvious) and who's job was it to integrate THAT stupid story line? What about Katrina? What was the point of all the build up of Katrina and then fizzzlllle?!

Seriously, stay home chewing on aluminum foil while listening to someone scratching nails on a chalkboard. Maybe you'll get hit by lightening (actually that was the only decent part).

Slumdog Millionaire is as acerbic as it is clear-eyed about the brutal power dynamics in modern-day Mumbai. But, at the same time, what makes it so warming and what has been inspiring audiences all across the world to cheer at its rousing ending. In the crowd of violant, action flicks and the movies revolving around poker">http://www.pokerstv.com/">poker on tv and in the big screen. No doubt in such atmosphere slumdog millionaire brings a fresh and exciting subject to the audiences.
