Rome Wasn't Built in a Day, But Can it Get Rebuilt as a Movie?

Which canceled TV series would you most expect to be getting theatrical movie buzz? (Other than Arrested Development, obviously.) Buffy, maybe? Or Angel? How about Veronica Mars? Nope, nope and nope. Um, Firefly again? Not even close. Friends? Try harder.

What if we narrow this down to shows that were on HBO? That's easy, right? It has to be Deadwood. Except that it's not.

Bruno Heller, who is now working on one of this season's only true hits, The Mentalist, isn't quite over his former series, Rome. No, really, he has a mega-hit on CBS, and he's still attached to Rome. He says, in fact, that there are talks about making the movie, and that said talks are "moving along." His logic for wanting to make the movie? "I would love to round that show off."

That's all well and good, Bruno. I am sure you're thinking of the fans, but... wait, there were no fans. And, also, we all know how it ends. Remember? This is a show about actual historical events.

The sets were destroyed, and so many of the actors have moved on to other TV projects that it might be difficult getting them all back for a film version. And it might be even harder to sell a movie based on a low-rated, genre TV show as a big draw at the box office. Then again, if they steer clear of the "based on the TV show" angle, they can possibly draw on the Gladiator and 300 fans, which might make it the most successful TV-to-movie in history. (But if making this happen means Kevin McKidd has to leave Grey's I will boycott on principle. Because Major Owen Hunt has single-handedly reinvigorated my interest in an otherwise boring medical drama this season.)

There were no fans? Dude, please, don't deny my existence. It's rude. Rome was a brilliant show which showed historical events on a new and very interesting angle. However, the series end with Octavian ready to be emperor, and there's like 200 years of peace after that so a movie about this ear would be quite boring. I'd love to see a movie about the crisis of the third century. That'd be epic.

I didn't always catch Rome, but I loved what I did see. This is a great excuse for me to catch up through On-Demand so I go to the movie informed. Also, I am still bitter about Carnivale. Very bitter!

No Fans! Rome was awesome, so don't talk about it like that. I mourn the loss so much that I even sat through every episode of Journeyman just to get a McKidd fix.

Rome was one of the best shows on television, and had lots of devoted fans. Plus, the Rome DVDs are consistently among the top-selling TV drama DVDs on Amazon, so obviously there are a lot of fans out there.

I am not really sure how you can say a show had no fans when said show was recapped on THIS VERY SITE.

However, I don't really see how this could be made into a movie. Caesar, Brutus, and Cassius died in S1. Antony and Cleopatra bit it in S2. I can't recall for certain, but Vorenus was at least on his deathbed in the final episode. Can you really make a movie out of Pullo, Octavian, and a (mostly) defeated Atia?

Is it going to star James Purefoy? I'm awfully afraid that's an entry point for drumming up requisite interest.
