SAG Awards Nominations: Cate Blanchett's Gonna Shiv Somebody! The SAG Awards are fun because they're light and fluffy and just about acting and not any real movie jobs like writing or directing. On the other hand, who gives a shit about acting? Anyway, several people were nominated for this award today, and almost all of them are quite famous. I'm here to tell you who and what's what about it.

Leading actor nominations were given out to all the obvious gents -- Sean Penn (FTW!), Mickey Rourke, Frank Langella (possibly FTW! For Frost/Nixon), Brad Pitt (doesn't have a shot in hell), and Richard Jenkins (The Visitor). Personally, I kind of hope Penn and Langella split the votes and there's a Richard Jenkins upset. Rent The Visitor if you've got the time; it's really a lovely film, and he's fantastic in it.

In the snubs department: no noms for Leonardo Dicaprio (Revolutionary Road), Christian Bale (for The Dark Knight, but I don't think even he expected to get one), and neither Ralph Fiennes nor that terrible kid from the trailer who can't act were nominated for The Reader. And can you belieeeeeve Brendan Fraser wasn't nominated for his work in the Mummy 3? What an outrage.

The supporting male actor nominations were nothing terribly surprising either. Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt) are the favorites to win, but how hilarious and awesome would it be if Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder) did? Josh Brolin (Milk) was nominated as well, and while I think he's a fine actor and I enjoyed Milk immensely, I don't at all get what the big deal about his particular performance is all about. If you ask me, Diego Luna or Emile Hirsch should have been nominated for supporting instead -- they may not have shot anybody in it, but their performances stole the movie.

In terms of the ladies, several people were nominated for Best Actress, but only one of them is named Meryl Streep (for Doubt, not Mamma Mia!, don't worry), so to hell with the rest of them. There were supporting actress noms for Amy Adams (Doubt) and Kate Winslet (The Reader), who have very good chances, but I'm kind of feeling an upset by Traji P. Henson (Benjamin Button) coming. I haven't seen Benjamin Button yet, but everything I've read about it says this is a star-making role for her. But who knows. Most notable snub: no nomination for Cate Blanchett (Benjamin Button) in supporting, which is weird, but that girl's got enough awards, hasn't she?

And finally, the outstanding ensemble cast nominations: Milk, Doubt, Slumdog Millionaire, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Frost/Nixon. I say Milk takes it, but Slumdog is obviously the buzziest movie out right now, and it's not going to win any of the other awards here, so this might be the place SAG honors it. Everyone in it was very good, including some of the cutest little boys in the history of the planet who are also actually good actors, so you can't say it doesn't have a shot. Oh, and love it or hate it, Tropic Thunder should have been nominated here.

So there you have it! Call your bookies now and leave your predictions and public outcries in the comments below! Oh, and there were also television nominations, and Angel has broken those bad boys down.
