Dogs Dominate America... At Least at the Movies

Proving this country loves nothing if not its dogs, Marley & Me held tight to its position at the top of the box office this weekend, adding $24.1 million, for a two-week total of $106.5. Impressive, yes? Indeed. Even for a dog film. According to Box Office Mojo, it's "the third-highest grossing dog movie on record," a coveted position, as we all know. It falls behind only Scooby-Doo (really? That movie?) and 101 Dalmatians, and is fast approaching the top of that list.

Following up Marley & Me at the box office were three other movies that opened over Christmas: Bedtime Stories, which added another $20 million for $85 million; The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which added $18.4 million for $79 million; and Valkyrie, which add $14 million for $60.7 million so far.

If that list sounds at all familiar to you, it's because it's the exact same as last week. In fact, the top seven films of the week are exactly the same. Of the three movies after that in the top 10, two are the same. This is what happens when no major movies open, which is what often happens the week of New Year's, after Christmas's huge number of openings.

Only The Spirit plummeted off the list (to 13th, with $3.3 million, for an embarrassing two-week take of $17.8 million), allowing Slumdog Millionaire to rise into the top 10, which is:

1. Marley & Me, $24,050,000 ($106,510,000 in two weeks)
2. Bedtime Stories, $20,317,000 ($85,351,000 in two weeks)
3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, $18,400,000 ($79,011,000 in two weeks)
4. Valkyrie, $14,042,000 ($60,692,000 in two weeks)
5. Yes Man, $13,850,000 ($79,413,000 in three weeks)
6. Seven Pounds, $10,000,000 ($60,038,000 in three weeks)
7. The Tale of Despereaux, $7,020,000 ($43,742,000 in three weeks)
8. Doubt, $5,031,000 ($18,730,000 in four weeks)
9. The Day the Earth Stood Still, $4,850,000 ($74,299,000 in four weeks)
10. Slumdog Millionaire, $4,770,000 ($28,779,000 in eight weeks)

What did you see this weekend? What did you like? Details, man!
