The recently released Pineapple Express DVD is all it's cracked up to be and more, folks. It's funny, packed with goodies, and so very educational. Here, we share the knowledge, with five things the DVD taught us (we're talking about the two-disc set or the Blu-ray, by the way; you won't learn nearly as much from the cheap, lame edition).
1. Your pot dealer is also your best friend. No, really. Did you think he was just some loser you met up with weekly (or daily; who are we to judge?) to get your fix? Turns out he's so much more than that. Just look at how loyal James Franco's dealer is to Seth Rogen's pothead in this movie. I mean, they get the crap beaten out of them on behalf of one another. Lots of friends you've had your whole life who have never sold you drugs probably wouldn't be willing to do that for you. They don't even know each other or care about each other when the movie starts, but by the end they're practically tattooing each other's names on their backs, all tramp-stamp style. Because if there's one thing this movie teaches us about pot dealers, it's that they're loyal, best-friend material.
2. Drinking games are for sissies; how about heroin games? The good folks on the commentary (featuring, at various times, Judd Apatow, Ed Begley Jr., Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, James Franco, Evan Goldberg, David Green, Craig Robinson and Rosie Perez) come up with a drinking game that will kill us (every time you see someone take a hit of weed in the movie, drink a bottle of tequila). But that's not even enough for these party animals, who soon go beyond drinking and into drug games. How about you mainline heroin every time James Franco talks during the commentary? If only I knew what exactly this means or how exactly to do it, I'd be glad to play along, of course. Anything for a movie. But you don't have to worry too much about your heroin costs going through the roof. It's only a two-hour movie, after all, and he's the least chatty of the nine, so you won't have to do heroin more than a handful of times, or so. And with all the people coming and going, you'll be too confused to know who's talking at any given time anyway.
3. Seth Rogen actually is every character he's ever played, only amplified by about 1,000. He really does seem like a pothead, giggling all the time, being inappropriate, making fun of other people as if they're all in junior high. And he definitely drops f-bombs every other word. I'm not sure whether this is a good thing or bad, but if he's still acting like a teenager in ten years it might be a problem. And it will probably stop being hilarious in movies.
4. Apatow and Company offer the best DVDs in existence, because they don't hold back on the special features. From Line-O-Rama, where people ad-lib many different lines or line deliveries for the same scene, to deleted scenes, plus more than a dozen featurettes, and several copies of the movie (extended version, theatrical version, digital copy), they really do include everything they had available to throw onto a disc short of the craft services menu. And you'll love (almost) every minute of it. (Though, seriously, the menu would have been nice.)
5. It is hilarious to watch a grown man touch another man's balls. Um, I know it sounds stupid/immature/annoying/inappropriate/whatever, but watch the gag reel on and try not to laugh when James Franco makes mocking rubbing motions next to Seth Rogen's underpantsed nether-regions, and then accidentally actually touches them. James is all, "Oh my god!" as he rolls over to get away from the bad place. But Seth is cool with it (see number three), all: "You got 'em! I just got to second base." And everyone devolves into laughter, including anyone watching the feature. Because, let's face it, if you aren't into that sort of silly, man-child humor, you wouldn't be watching this DVD (or reading about it).
