When actor Joaquin Phoenix announced last October that he was retiring from acting in order to pursue his musical career, it was speculated here in the Moviefile that maybe he was just a little bit crazy. It certainly seemed an unexpected development, considering that his other career choices in film were pretty smart in recent years, having starred in Walk the Line and the last two M. Night Shyamalan movies that were any good. Today, Phoenix's planet-sized crazy has managed to pull brother-in-law actor Casey Affleck into its orbit. Affleck isn't following suit and retiring from acting, too, but he will be taking on the role of documentarist in order to film the progress of Phoenix's new musical career.
It seems like the makings of the shortest documentary ever, but apparently it will be a feature-length project. Filming kicks off tonight in a Las Vegas club where Phoenix will make his stage debut as -- wait for it -- a rapper. Seriously. Joaquin Phoenix is a rapper. His debut album will be produced by Sean "Puff Daddy then P. Diddy then Just Diddy" Combs, as soon as someone can convince Mr. Combs he isn't dreaming and that he did, indeed, agree to sign on for this thing. A cursory search through the Interwebs isn't turning up the name of this club, but perhaps it's best kept a secret until the would-be rap star perfects his gangsta ways.
What do you think? Will Joaquin's career soar like a phoenix or plummet to earth in a fiery blaze?

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssshhhhhh BOOOM!
"The Village" was not any good. Sorry.
"having starred in Walk the Line and the last two M. Night Shyamalan movies that were any good."
He was in The Sixth Sense *and* The Sixth Sense?
I guess The Happening *did* sort of make The Village seem better by comparison.
the village is the best shyamalan movie. is just not a horro movie.
His crazy went from eccentric and slightly interesting to complete basket case in only months. Now that's faster than I've seen before.
As a fan of the Phoenix brothers since the 1980s, (River's death devastated me) I think Joaquin better watch his drug intake. I'm sorry, but NO WAY is he sober. I'm not saying that to mean, but it would be so sad to lose another talented individual.
Enough already witth a great talent so sad a life. He is just another spoiled brat who never had to earn anything.
He is totally nuts.
I agree with Julie...Joaquin get thee to rehab ASAP.
I'm with Julie and Sue. I don't want to see him go the way that River did. He needs to get away from Hollywood for a while. Man, those parents really did a number on those kids. I hope he sorts his shit out soon, I really do.
Very informative post indeed.. Blogging is one of my habit..
Hi there you hot thing I miss your acting so very much In Ladder49 you stole my heart as well as my son's My Dad was a firemen for 34 years and retired Platoon chief, a great firemen not so great Dad but when he retired my son put on the workwear for a picture he was amazing looking. At the retirement party the higher ups said to me they make exceptions and would hire him on the spot. I looked at them with the upmost respect and told them that his Mom didn't have 35 plus years to sit by a police scanner. He had the heart that they need but I am a single Mom of 4 now 2 at the time and he is and still is the Love of my life. That was in March of 2004 your movie came out and the character was killed, I had already talked to my son as he is amazing in every way and told him about the offer as well as my response about not losing him to a fire one day, he said he wanted to take his Mom on a date to see the movie, when we came out he said that is what he wanted to do. I said the guy died Jamie and he responded with but he saved alot of lives and it only cost him his. I am a very tough Mom and fight for alot things important to me, I have a step-brother and sister whose Dad was a fireman and lost his life on the job, my son is named after my step-brother. The man was the first to loose his life saving another in Thunder Bay, Ontario so I know first hand that it happens. That was 6 years ago and I think I lost him to drugs today. I am not that tough on him anymore because somewhere I lost my son. I am writing this letter to in hopes that you read it and know the impact you had/have in my life. Walk the line you were amazing and had the honor of celebrating a major figure of generations. I have a 9 year old daughter and 5 year old twin girls I can relate to Johnny Cash as I feel that lost alot of the time. Besides being a great actor alot of people look up to you. After watching you in major movies a friend lent me some movies and My Kids and I watched reservation road and you were great you do everything with a passion, we also have that in common I don't know if you will read this or where to send my thoughts on the life you had. I just had to say that we have alot in common and as I drink a beer and wonder why? I wanted to know that you are a role model to so many women and men, kids and adults everywhere and you make me think that if you had all the fame and fortune and still had some crap in your life that I can always have a strong opinion and strength in what I want out of life for me and my kids. My kids are my world and if now 5 year old twins know who Johnny Cash is because of you you did a fine thing. Long comment but wanted you to know that you made a difference in our lives, you are a person and I wanted to make a difference in yours. Thanks for the time and space Kim
